Friday Co-ed Grade 7 and Grade 8/9

This program will be a great opportunity for your child to hone his or her skills in the buildup to high school basketball.  Each session is designed to give keen players the opportunity to develop both individual skills and team tactics through personalized training on passing, dribbling, shooting, and offensive & defensive concepts. The Coed Grade 7 and Grades 8/9 Sessions are limited to the first 20 registrants.

2020 WVBC Spring Camps 

Spring Co-ed Grades 2-3 Session

This program emphasizes fun games that use basketball to teach fundamental movements and introduces beginning basketball skills.  Basic movement skills include the ABC’s of agility, balance, coordination and speed. Specific basketball skills taught include stance, footwork, dribbling, passing and shooting.  These skills will be developed through a variety of small-sided games and competitions.  Your child will surely fall in love with basketball after attending this high energy, fun filled session!  The Co-ed Grades 2-3 Session is limited to the first 32 registrants. Dates: Wednesdays, April 14- June 2  Time: 4:30 – 5:30 Location: West Van Secondary School (Gym TBA) Cost: $165 (does not include GST)

Spring Development Sessions Grades 4-8

All “Development” programs will be modelled on Canada Basketball’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model. For more info about the LTAD, please click HERE.  Each player will learn basic skills, strategies and rules that allow for future development, according to their physical and emotional maturation level.   Weekly sessions will include a mix of individual drills and contests in a fun-filled learning atmosphere. Areas of focus will include: shooting mechanics, basic ball handling skills, one on one moves, defensive stance, and an introduction to basketball specific strength and conditioning. A typical session involves 45 minutes of skills and competitions, followed by 30 minutes of small sided half court games or full court scrimmaging.  All Development sessions are limited to 32 registrants. Monday Games Night!

This 8-week program is designed to improve skills and basketball IQ through team concepts by doing what every player loves… Playing Games! During the first 3 weeks of the program, players will be introduced to offensive concepts (pass/cut/replace motion principles, pick and roll, penetrate and kick, spacing…) and defensive concepts (help and recover, seeing ball and check, weakside defense…) After the third week, four teams comprising 8-10 players will be made. Each team will be assigned a WVBC Coach who will lead their squad through a 3 week “Regular Season” and 2 weeks of “Playoffs”, culminating in the Spring Finals being played on Monday June 8th.  All full-court games will be played 4 on 4 to ensure every player gets lots of touches of the ball.  Dates: Mondays, April 12- June 7 (No session Apr 13 Easter Mon or May 18 Victoria Day) Times: See Home page Location: West Van Secondary School (Gym TBA) Cost: $190 (Does not include GST)

I understand that the West Vancouver Basketball Club has the right to deny admission or dismiss any participant from the program who displays inappropriate or unsafe behaviour. I understand that there are certain activities where there is risk of injury and hereby agree to waive and release every such coach of the West Vancouver Basketball Club and the West Vancouver Basketball Club itself from all manner of action suits, losses, damages or injuries however caused by negligence or otherwise arising from my child’s/ children’s participation in this program. Fall Coed Grade 6 and 7  Development Sessions

Whether your child is new to basketball or a star in the Steve Nash league, this division will be rewarding for all participants. This program incorporates all that was taught in the Grade 4/5 division as well as the introduction to team tactics such as fast break options, half court offense and team defensive philosophies. As with other divisions, a typical session involves 45 minutes of skills and competitions, followed by 30 minutes of half and full court scrimmaging.  The Coed Grade 6 and 7 Divisions are both limited to the first 32 registrants. WVBC FUN-damentals program balances the introduction of basketball specific skills with fun contests and games. The foundational skills emphasized include: shooting mechanics, dribbling skills, moving without the ball, individual and team defensive and offensive principles, and decision-making. In addition to skill competitions, there will be time devoted to small-sided games and mini tournaments. Each young athlete is sure to improve their game while participating in a fun and encouraging environment. Open to boys and girls in every session! This will be a perfect opportunity for players to hone their skills in preparation for high school tryouts or the Grade 7 basketball season. Open to boys and girls in every session! High School Elite Invite Only Camps (Boys entering Gr 9-10. Girls entering Gr 10-12)

The High School Elite Invite Only Camps are reserved for players who have been invited by a WVBC Coach. These camps are intended for players that have had played at least one year for their high school team and have had a significant role on that team. These Elite camps will be higher intensity and skills and drills will be intended for more experienced players. Please contact Coach Meldrum at info@wvbc.ca if you feel that you are deserving of an invitation.

Friday Games Night!

Games, games and more games!  At each Games Night!, WVBC participants will be split into 4 equal teams and led by an experienced coach.  Following a dynamic warmup, each team will play 4 on 4 games in which everyone will receive equal playing time.  Although the games will sure to get competitive, the main goal will be for every player to have fun doing what they enjoy most about basketball... playing games! The WVBC High School Prep camps are designed for players who are hoping to improve their game in the off season. It is intended for players who have had previous experience playing the game and the skills and concepts taught will reflect this.  The High School Prep Camp will focus on individual skill development in addition to team concepts and tactics.  Basketball strength and conditioning exercises will also be interspersed throughout the week. Playing with other highly motivated campers, each player will be sure to improve their game while participating in this competitive and fun environment. 2018 WVBC Spring Camps

Spring Co-ed Grades 2-3 Session

This program emphasizes fun games that use basketball to teach fundamental movements and introduces beginning basketball skills.  Basic movement skills include the ABC’s of agility, balance, coordination and speed. Specific basketball skills taught include stance, footwork, dribbling, passing and shooting.  These skills will be developed through a variety of small-sided games and competitions.  Your child will surely fall in love with basketball after attending this high energy, fun filled session!  The Co-ed Grades 2-3 Session is limited to the first 30 registrants. Dates: Mondays, March 27- May 29 (No session Apr 17 or May 22) Time: 4:30 - 5:30 Location: West Van Secondary School (Gym TBA) Cost: $165 (does not include GST)

Spring Development Sessions Grades 4-7

All "Development" programs will be modelled on Canada Basketball's Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model. For more info about the LTAD, please click HERE.  Each player will learn basic skills, strategies and rules that allow for future development, according to their physical and emotional maturation level.   Weekly sessions will include a mix of individual drills and contests in a fun-filled learning atmosphere. Areas of focus will include: shooting mechanics, basic ball handling skills, one on one moves, defensive stance, and an introduction to basketball specific strength and conditioning. A typical session involves 45 minutes of skills and competitions, followed by 30 minutes of small sided half court games or full court scrimmaging.  All Development sessions are limited to 32 registrants. Friday Games Night!

Games, games and more games!  At each Games Night!, WVBC participants will be split into 4 equal teams and led by an experienced coach.  Following a dynamic warmup, each team will play 4 on 4 games in which everyone will receive equal playing time.  Although the games will sure to get competitive, the main goal will be for every player to have fun doing what they enjoy most about basketball... playing games! Whether your child is new to basketball or a star in the Steve Nash league, this division will be rewarding for all participants. This program incorporates all that was taught in the Grade 4/5 division as well as the introduction to team tactics such as fast break options, half court offense and team defensive philosophies. As with other divisions, a typical session involves 45 minutes of skills and competitions, followed by 30 minutes of half and full court scrimmaging.  The Coed Grade 6 and 7 Divisions are both limited to the first 32 registrants.

Focus will also be given to team offensive and defensive tactics. This will be a perfect opportunity for players to hone their skills in preparation for high school tryouts or the Grade 7 basketball season. Open to boys and girls in every session! Playing with other highly motivated campers, each player will be sure to improve their game while participating in this competitive environment. Location Change: Both sessions on Thursday, Sept 26th will be held in the SOUTH CAMPUS GYM of West Van Secondary.  The gym can be found by traveling west along Inglewood Ave and turning right immediately before the grass field. Drive up the campus for about 50 metres and then turn left. The gym is directly behind the Inglewood Curriculum Centre. Each session will begin and end at the regular time.  Below is a map to help.

Co-ed Entering Grades 2-4 Future Stars Camps

The WVBC Boys and Girls Future Stars program introduces basketball through fun, active training and develops general movement skills essential to basketball success. Skills taught include: getting open, passing under pressure, basic offense and defense principles, ball handling, pivoting, passing, lay-ups and shooting. These skills will be developed through a variety of small-sided games and competitions, which ensure action and fun for everyone. Your child will surely fall in love with basketball after attending this high energy, fun-filled week! Open to boys and girls in every session!

Boys' and Girls' Entering Grade 4-6 FUN-damental Camps

WVBC FUN-damentals program balances the introduction of basketball specific skills with fun contests and games. The foundational skills emphasized include: shooting mechanics, moving without the ball, individual and team defensive and offensive principles, and decision-making. In addition to skill competitions, there will be time devoted to small-sided games and mini tournaments. Each young athlete is sure to improve their game while participating in a fun and encouraging environment. Please note boys only, girls only, and co-ed sessions provided.

Boys' and Girls' Entering Grade 7-8 Development Camps

WVBC Development Camp will introduce some higher-level skill development, while stressing the importance of the basic fundamentals of the game. Areas of focus will include: dribble moves into shot, defensive footwork, development of the 'off' hand, one-on-one play, advanced ball handling, speed and agility training and basketball conditioning. Focus will also be given to team offensive and defensive tactics. This will be a perfect opportunity for players to hone their skills in preparation for high school tryouts or the Grade 7 basketball season. Please note boys only and girls only sessions are provided.

Boys' Entering Grades 7-8, and Grade 9-10 Full Day High Intensity Camps

WVBC High Intensity Camp is designed for boys who are serious about taking their game to the next level and are willing to do the work to get there. Learning skills include: one-on-one moves, screens on and off ball, post play, shooting drills, and more. Basketball strength and conditioning exercises and skill development drills will be followed by structured games and small tournaments. Playing with other highly motivated campers, each player will be sure to improve their game while participating in this competitive environment.

The objectives of this program are as follows: have fun, meet new friends, and learn new basketball skills.  Each boy and girl will be introduced to fundamental skills and rules of the game in a high energy, fun filled atmosphere. Skills taught will include: shooting, passing, dribbling, defensive stance, spacing etc... Your child is sure to fall in love with basketball after participating in this program!  The Co-ed Grades 2-3 Division is limited to the first 30 registrants. This program incorporates all that was taught in the Grade 4/5 division as well as the introduction to team tactics such as fast break options, half court offense and team defensive philosophies. As with other divisions, a typical session involves 1 hour of skills and competitions, followed by 30 minutes of full court scrimmaging.  The Boys' Grade 6/7 Division is limited to the first 30 registrants. Dates: Wednesdays, April 6th – May 25th Time: 7:00 - 8:30 Location: West Van Secondary School (Gym TBA) Cost: $180 + HST

Girls' Grade 6/7 Development Program

This program is designed to give keen players the opportunity to develop both individual and team tactics through personalized training on passing, dribbling, offensive and defensive coverage. A typical session involves a 10 minute warm-up, 50 minutes of skill development and competitions and 30 minutes of full court scrimmaging.  The Girls' Grades 6/7 Division is limited to the first 30 registrants. Dates: Thursdays, April 7th – May 26th Time: 7:00 - 8:30 Location: West Van Secondary School (Gym TBA) Cost: $180 + HST

2011 Spring Elite Teams

Players that are hoping to participate on a WVBC Elite Team will need to be selected after a tryout.  The dates of the tryouts will be listed below and each player must attend every tryout.  Each team will be made up of 10-12 players and members will receive equal playing time during competitive games.  Each team will participate in a minimum of 3 tournaments (12 games) and have 1 or 2 practices per week from the beginning of April to the beginning of July.   Each player is required to pay $25 to try out.  Team fees will cover gym rental, coaches, equipment, tournament fees, referees, insurance etc... Exact prices will be finalized at a later date but parents should budget for around $600.

Assistant Coaches

Morgan Mclaughlin

Morgan is a welcome addition to the WVBC coaching staff. She had an illustrious playing career for Simon Fraser and helped lead the Clan to 2 National Championships. She was also named on the CIS All-Tournament team in 2003. After finishing at SFU, Morgan continued playing professionally in Germany before ending her career in 2007. Morgan has a tonne of coaching experience, having coached for SFU and BC provincial teams. She is currently teaching at Collingwood, where she is also the Head Coach of the Senior Girls Basketball Team.

Jon Hughes

Jon is a former West Van Secondary School star. After earning North Shore and Provincial All Star awards, Jon continued his playing career for the University of Victoria Vikes. In 2005, Jon helped the Vikes earn a Canada West Championhip title and a fifth place finish at the Nationals. Jon is currently teaching  at Ridgeview Elementary .  He is also coaching the Grade 9 Boys Team at West Vancouver Secondary School.

Bryan Schofield

Coach Bryan is returning for another season with WVBC. Bryan is currently teaching at Ridgeview Elementary School in West Van. He has had many years experience head coaching in the Steve Nash League and he has been a lead instructor at Dan Miscisco's All Star Sports Camps as well as WVBC Summer Camps.

John Leong

John has been coaching at WVBC for 3 years. He is also a very talented player who is currently in his first year with the Capilano University Blues.  John was a standout with perennial powerhouse Handsworth in high school, where he won numerous All-Star awards and scholarships.  He is a favourite among WVBC members and a tremendous role model to up and coming basketballers.

Andrew McGuinness

Andrew was a standout with perennial powerhouse Handsworth, where he helped the Royals to back-to-back North Shore Championships. He has also represented BC in numerous selection teams and was the leading scorer at the U-17 National Championships in PEI . A deadly outside shooter, Andrew is currently in his third year at the University of Calgary, and is one of the best shooting guards in the conference.

Co-ed Grades 2-3 Session

This program emphasizes fun games that use basketball to teach fundamental movements and introduces beginning basketball skills.  Basic movement skills include the ABC’s of agility, balance, coordination and speed. Specific basketball skills taught include stance, footwork, dribbling, passing and shooting.  These skills will be developed through a variety of small-sided games and competitions.  Your child will surely fall in love with basketball after attending this high energy, fun filled session!  The Co-ed Grades 2-3 Session is limited to the first 30 registrants. A typical session will also include basketball specific strength and conditioning exercises  followed by structured games and small tournaments. The Boys' Grade 8 Session is limited to the first 30 registrants.
